'Code Orange' Air Quality Alert Includes Prince George's County

Those sensitive to air quality should avoid strenuous activities, outdoor exercise.

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments has issued a “code orange” air quality alert for the Washington, D.C., metro area Tuesday, including Prince George’s County

During a “code orange” situation, the air may be unhealthy for sensitive groups, such as children, older adults, asthmatics and those with heart and lung problems due to pollution concentrations.

Montgomery and Prince George’s County in Maryland, along with the District of Columbia and several northern Virginia counties are under the air quality alert on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

People can avoid the effects of air pollution by not exercising outside and abstaining from strenuous activity, according to experts.

The high in Prince George’s County will be 94 degrees on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will hit 97 degrees on the heat index at 4 p.m.
