Hyattsville Man Dies in Industrial Accident

Workers from Silver Spring and Hyattsville were thrown from the bucket of a lift machine at an Ellicott City work site.

Two men died in an industrial accident in Ellicott City Saturday morning, according to Howard County Police.

The victims were identified as Rolando Lopez Mendez, 31, of Silver Spring, and Erik Morales Ortiz, 31, of Hyattsville,

At 7:45 a.m. Saturday, police responded to the 9100 block of Father’s Legacy regarding reports of two critically injured subjects.

The men were reportedly working at the site when they both were thrown from the bucket of a lift machine when it tipped on its side. The men were employed with Brothers Construction Framing.

First responders found both men on the ground suffering from significant injuries. They were taken to Howard County General Hospital, where they were both pronounced dead a short time later, according to police.

It is unknown what caused the lift machine to tip over. Preliminarily, police found no signs of foul play.

The accident remains under investigation by the Howard County Police Department and Maryland Occupational Safety and Health Agency.
