In honor of Juneteenth National Independence Day, M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation Administrative Offices Closed Friday, June 18

Community Centers, Sports Facilities and Other Amenities to Remain Open

Riverdale, MD - In observance of the new Juneteenth National Independence Day, The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County is closing tomorrow, Friday, June 18, 2021. This day is monumental to U.S. history as the day recognized for the end of slavery. M-NCPPC Chair Elizabeth M. Hewlett and M-NCPPC Vice-Chair Casey Anderson made the decision today after President Joe Biden declared Juneteenth a federal holiday. This decision also follows the guidance of the State of Maryland’s decision to close state offices, Prince George’s County Government and Montgomery County Government, which passed a bill last October recognizing the day as a holiday.

Open tomorrow with reduced hours are community centers and sports facilities to include pools, tennis bubbles, golf courses, trap and skeet as well as Fairland, Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex and Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Center.

Additional facilities that will be open tomorrow are:

  • College Park Aviation Museum
  • College Park Airport
  • Historic house museums
  • Nature centers
  • Old Maryland Farm
  • Permitted athletic fields
  • Waterfront parks

Show Place Arena will be open for their regular operating schedule. The Department’s Yoga and Fitness in the Parks program will continue as regularly scheduled. Montpelier and Oxon Hill Manor will be open in the evening from 5-7 pm for a Juneteenth event.
