Recycle Live Christmas Trees in Prince George's County

Curbside collection and drop-off locations are available to go green after the holiday.

Once the shiny ornaments are off of the tree and the lights are packed away, you’ll need an environmentally-friendly way to dispose of that live Christmas tree.

The Prince George’s County Department of the Environment is offering a free tree recycling program for residents. From Dec. 26 to Feb. 1, participants can leave the undecorated tree at the curb before 6:30 a.m. on the regularly schedule collection day.

An alternative option is to bring the tree to the Prince George’s County Yard Waste Composting Facility, 6601 Southeast Crain Highway in Upper Marlboro, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Trees may also be brought to the Brown Station Road Public Convenience Center in Upper Marlboro, 3501 Brown Station Road, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday.

The curbside collection and drop-off locations are free and trees should be bare and not bagged. The trees will be shredded and cured to make mulch that will be used in the annual spring Mulch madness giveaway event.

“By recycling your live Christmas tree, you help create a valuable resource that will enhance your garden and our communities,” Department of the Environment Director Adam Ortiz said in a news release. “This free program also benefits the community by reducing the amount of debris sent to our landfill.”
