Sizzling Temps Prompt Heat Safety Warnings from County

Prince George's County residents can drop by neighborhood recreational facilities during business hours to escape the hot temperatures.

With temperatures expected to climb to 90 degrees or higher the next three days, Prince George’s County officials are reminding residents of how to stay safe during the heat and Air Quality Alert.

Extreme heat can be dangerous, and even deadly, if precautionary measures are not taken to protect families and their pets.

  • Limit outdoor activity
  • Wear light weight, light-colored clothing
  • Stay hydrated - Drink plenty of water (Avoid drinks with excessive caffeine or alcohol)
  • Postpone outdoor activities until late evening or early mornings
  • Monitor those at high risk (Infants, Children, Older Adults and Individuals with pre-existing medical conditions and disabilities)
  • If you must go outside for work or other activities, take breaks, wear sunscreen, hats, protective gear and drink plenty of water.
  • Remember to check on pets and do not leave them in cars for any length of time.
  • Be aware of the signs and symptons of heat stroke: changes in consciousness, vomiting, high body temperatures, throbbing headaches, difficulty in breathing, hallucinations or confusion

Residents in need of relief from the heat can seek shelter in air-conditioned facilities such as shopping malls, libraries, grocery stores or movie theaters. Or drop by one of the designated Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission Recreational Facilities to seek relief. These neighborhood facilities are open to county residents during normal business hours.
