Tanglewood Works Is Making Hyattsville Its Permanent Home

From Tanglewood Works: Tanglewood Works opened its doors at 5132 Baltimore Avenue in October 2016 as a pop-up, and is now thrilled to announce this location will be its permanent home!

Sue Mondeel, owner, stated, “Our dream to stay at this Hyattsville location has become a reality! So excited to be a permanent resident of this awesome neighborhood! Our wonderful news comes with a downside - In order to take on such a huge challenge we sadly will be saying goodbye to our original store on the front corner of Community Forklift. We are sincerely grateful to the Forklift team for taking a chance on us over three years ago when we proposed a booth and then a shop dedicated to upcycling & art. Our success has been propelled by those who believe in our mission to salvage through art, and we thank all of you who believe in Tanglewood Works.”

Mondeel’s plans for 2017 include hosting classes in all things upcycled, private painting lessons, family friendly gatherings, fundraisers for local causes and even a new business series for folks who are interested in selling handmade art. Hyattsville Mayor Candace Hollingsworth said, “I’m so thrilled for both Sue Mondeel and our city to learn that Tanglewood Works has found a home here in Hyattsville’s Arts District! Her store adds a new layer of vibrancy to our Route 1 shopping district and calls upon the nostalgia that helps Hyattsville keep its magnetic charm.”

The items for sale are cool, fun and "hip" like Hyattsville, and the concept of reusing and up-cycling fits within Hyattsville's "Sustainable Maryland" designation. The icing on the cake is that It's a small, local business run by a great person who lives locally and gives back to the community.”

Tanglewood Works started life as Shabadaba Chic as a vendor at Eastern Market in SE DC. After a cold winter, Sue, whose Twitter handle is @DumpsterDivaDIY, opened a booth inside Community Forklift three years ago. Business was good, and Tanglewood Works was born 2.5 years ago as a shop on the front side of the Forklift building. In October 2016 Sue launched a “pop-up” in the Hyattsville/Gateway Arts District, as of January 1, 2017, this Hyattsville location is her permanent home! Upcycled furniture and gifts are available for purchase, as well as paint and finishes for DIY projects. Mondeel also has a production studio in Mt. Rainier, a vibrantly busy and colorful creative space, with many works in progress. She holds classes and meet-ups there, such as Chalk Painting, Using Alcohol Inks, and workshops for aspiring artist businesses.
