Weather Alert: Heavy Rain, Flooding Possible For Father's Day

The National Weather Service predicts up to three inches of rain in parts of Maryland by Sunday with the possibility of flash flooding.

The National Weather Service is predicting torrential downpours will begin falling in Maryland overnight Saturday into Sunday prompting a flash flood watch for much of the state.

The heaviest rainfall is predicted for early on Father’s Day.

The watch begins at 8 p.m. Saturday and runs through 8 a.m. Sunday. Areas included in the watch are Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and the District of Columbia, plus all or parts of Carroll, Baltimore, Prince George’s, Anne Arundel, Montgomery, Howard and Harford counties in Maryland.

The Weather Service warns:

“Expect showers and thunderstorms to increase late Saturday afternoon and continue into early Sunday morning. Some of the storms will contain torrential downpours which could lead to flash flooding. Widespread rainfall amounts of one to three inches can be expected with locally higher amounts possible. Rainfall rates of one to two inches per hour could occur with the strongest thunderstorms.”

Heavy rainfall in short periods of time may cause rapid rises on creeks and streams, as well as flash flooding in urban areas.
