LINTHICUM, MD — A new budget carrier, Avelo Airlines, debuted Thursday at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.

The 1-year-old airline is now offering nonstop roundtrips to Tweed-New Haven Airport in Connecticut. Tickets start at $59.

“Avelo has plans to grow,” BWI Executive Director Ricky Smith said in a press release. "We’re excited that the airline will offer our local residents and visitors added low fare travel options."

The Wilmington trips will follow on July 1 with fares beginning at $29.

"Avelo’s unmatched convenience and affordability makes traveling to these great destinations easier than ever," airline Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy said. "We look forward to expanding our service from the National Capital region and know our Customers will enjoy using Avelo as a reliable and affordable choice for their next vacation, weekend getaway, or reconnecting with family and friends.”

Passenger traffic is continuing to improve at BWI. The airport saw 18.8 million passengers in 2021. That's a 68 percent increase from 2020.

Cargo flights are also on the upswing. BWI's cargo shipments passed 618 million pounds in 2021, setting a new annual record.

"In 2022, passenger traffic is expected to further increase as more international and domestic routes are added," BWI spokesperson Jonathan Dean said in a different release. "Several major capital projects are now underway that will support airline service and enhance the travel experience for airport customers."

With travel surging, BWI reopened its Express Parking lot earlier this month. The 1,400-space lot closed in March 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic first struck.

The spike in passengers has enticed other carriers to resume service from BWI. Airlines returning this year include Air Canada, British Airways, Condor and Icelandair.

The airport also welcomed Play, an Icelandic budget airline, last month.
