Earthquake Confirmed, Did You Feel It?

Nearly 100 residents, most in Anne Arundel County, reported feeling a small earthquake Saturday night. Did you? Tell us in comments.

Some residents reported hearing a boom and felt walls shake Saturday night when a magnitude 2.2 earthquake shook residents from Bowie to Annapolis, reports the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake was centered in the Crownsville area, and occurred just after 10 p.m., according to the federal agency.

The mild earthquake was as strong a quake measued three years ago in the Westminster area.

More than 90 people who felt the quake sent reports to USGS, says The Washington Post. Most of the reports were in Anne Arundel, with 21 from Annapolis.

But two Columbia residents also reported to the USGS that they felt the tremor.

Earthquakes happen when there is movement below the Earth’s surface on fault lines. They can occur anywhere in the U.S. and usually last less than a minute, according to FEMA.

In August 2011, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake centered in Virginia sentshockwaves through Maryland.

In September 2012, a 2.1-magnitude earthquake hit Carroll County.
