Lifeguards rescued a girl who wasn't breathing at an Anne Arundel County pool. Here's how they saved her life.

SEVERNA PARK, MD — Lifeguards on Monday saved a girl's life at a Severna Park pool, officials said.

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department said it was called to the Whittier Community Pool after on-duty lifeguards pulled a minor, who wasn't breathing, from the water.

A press release said the lifeguards immediately started providing medical care, including CPR, and revived her before medics arrived.

Medics said they took the patient to a hospital as a precaution.

"Quick actions by all involved led to a successful outcome!" the Anne Arundel County Fire Department said in its press release.

The fire department offered these water safety tips:

Supervision

  • Actively and attentively monitor your children
  • Limit distractions, put your electronic devices away

Barriers

  • Children should never be unattended around water
  • Use designated swimming areas
  • Swim where a lifeguard is on duty when possible
  • Wear a life jacket when necessary

Swimming Lessons

  • Children and adults
  • Caregivers and family members
  • Start lessons early

"As we roll into summer, The Anne Arundel County Fire Department wants to remind everyone of the dangers in and around the water," the agency said in its release. "Accidents can happen within seconds; Have a plan, LEARN CPR, and call 911 as soon as the emergency occurs."
