LINTHICUM, MD — More than a year after British Airways stopped offering a direct flight between Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and London, the carrier announced that the Transatlantic leg overseas will resume on Friday.

The flight was suspended in March 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Airport officials announced Thursday that initially, the flight to London’s Heathrow Airport will be offered three days a week – Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. British Airlines plans to add a fourth day (Thursday) beginning in December.

British Airways offers its BWI Marshall Airport service on the modern Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, which accommodate 214 passengers in a three-class configuration.

“We can’t wait to welcome our customers back on board our Baltimore flights, and we are honored to be playing our part in reuniting families and friends with their loved ones after such a long time apart,” Marie Hilditch, British Airways’ head of North American sales said in a news release. “The safety of our customers and colleagues has always been at the heart of everything we do. We know some customers won’t have flown for a long time, we can assure them we have a range of Covid-19 measures in place to provide stress and hassle-free travel.”

Maryland Transportation Secretary Greg Slater called the return of the Transatlantic flight another step toward its recovery from the impact felt during the COVID-19 pandemic. Airport officials also announced recently that it expects holiday travel to return to pre-pandemic levels starting this weekend ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.
