CROFTON, MD — The Baltimore Ravens on Thursday honored an Anne Arundel County coach as their high school coach of the week.

Todd Sommerville, varsity football head coach of the Crofton Cardinals, took home the award.

The Ravens applauded Sommerville for running a blossoming new football program at Crofton High School, which opened in 2020. The Cardinals went 2-7 last year in their first season of varsity football. Crofton has turned it around this year, starting the season 3-0.

"A lot of the credit goes to our senior class," Sommerville said in a press release. "They have been dedicated to finding success this season and starting the program in the right way so there is a foundation of success for future players who come through."

Crofton visited Annapolis on Sept. 16 and defeated the Panthers 40-0 to record the first shutout victory in school history.

Senior outside linebacker Brayden Shaw returned an interception for a Cardinals touchdown and scooped up a blocked punt for another score, helping Crofton to a 19-0 lead at halftime.

Three seniors broke free for long Cardinals touchdowns in the second half. Runningback Javon Gary notched a 44-yard score, runningback Abraham Sani ripped off an 84-yard touchdown and wide receiver Sam Ross found the end zone on a 65-yard play.

Crofton travels to South River on Friday for a 5:30 p.m. matchup with the Seahawks.

Sommerville is this year's third Ravens High School Coach of the Week. Baltimore will honor nine coaches this season.

Messay Hailemariam of St. Frances Academy took home the award in Week 1. Chris Bassler of Westminster High School claimed the honor in Week 2.

Each winner will get a $2,000 donation for their football program. Baltimore will also invite each awardee to its home game against the Atlanta Falcons on Dec. 24 for a chance to be named the Ravens High School Coach of the Year.

This effort is part of Ravens RISE, the team's football outreach program presented by MedStar Sports Medicine. The year-round initiative organizes clinics, tournaments, grants, ticket donations, games at M&T Bank Stadium and chances to meet Ravens players or coaches.
