Severn Passenger Dies When Minivan Crashes Into Tow Truck On I-695

CATONSVILLE, MD β€” A Severn resident who was a passenger in a minivan died Saturday morning when the vehicle spun out and struck a tow truck at a crash site on I-695, Maryland State Police said.

The fatal mishap began with a two-vehicle crash about 8:05 a.m. on the outer loop of I-695 close to Wilkens Avenue on the left shoulder in the Catonsville area of Baltimore County.

No injuries were reported in the crash, state police said, and tow truck operators were en route to remove the vehicles.

Troopers left the scene to investigate a single-vehicle crash on the inner loop in the same area when they received a call about 8:30 a.m. that a minivan had collided with a tow truck at the scene of the first outer loop crash.

The passenger of the minivan, identified as Sang Yoo Kang, 60, of Severn, was declared dead at the scene by Baltimore County emergency medical services personnel, state police said. The drivers of the minivan and tow truck were taken to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for treatment.

The outer loop of I-695 at Wilkins Avenue was partially closed for about 3 1/2 hours before reopening just before noon.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
