MILLERSVILLE, MD — Animal lovers with gently worn, used or new shoes can help save cats and dogs living in high-kill shelters along the East Coasts who are at high risk of euthanasia or in need of critical veterinary care. Saving Grace Animal Rescue of Maryland is hosting its sixth annual shoe collection drive now through May 15. Local businesses also can help by placing a public shoe collection box at their locations.

The rescue will earn money back based upon the number of pairs of shoes collected after Funds2Orgs purchases the donated shoes. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people start, maintain and grow businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send her son to law school, according to Saving Grace Animal Rescue.

“In the past, we have raised over $2,000 with this fundraiser which allowed us to save cats and dogs like Clara, a five-month-old beagle mix who came to us emaciated and requiring surgery that will need to be performed by a specialist," said Lauren Giles, director, in a statement.

"We know that most people have extra shoes in their closets, so it is a great way to help our four-legged friends that need some extra care and to help those less fortunate become self-sufficient. It’s a win-win for everyone,” added Amber Shipley, dog foster coordinator.

By donating shoes to Saving Grace Animal Rescue of Maryland, the shoes will be given a second chance and make a difference in people’s lives while helping the animals. Visit https://tinyurl.com/rhhfxcm for additional information and a current list of collection locations.
