SEVERN, MD — Archbishop Spalding's Kyle Schmitt was named the Baltimore Ravens High School Coach of the Week. The Ravens announced the news Wednesday, days after Spalding won its first Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association "A" Conference football championship.

The Archbishop Spalding Cavaliers of Severn beat the Calvert Hall Cardinals of Towson 34-10 on Nov. 18 to claim the state title.

Sophomore quarterback Malik Washington connected with senior wide receiver Max Moss for a 23-yard touchdown pass on the game's opening drive to give the Cavaliers a 7-0 lead. Spalding led 14-3 at the half. Up 27-10 in the fourth quarter, Washington again hit Moss from 33 yards out for the game's final touchdown.

The championship was held at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis.

"We had a really good group of kids this year who came together after some disappointment in the playoffs last season," Schmitt said in a press release. "This group of kids showed a lot of resolve, and last Friday was the exclamation point on a really good season."

Schmitt has led the Cavaliers for the past 10 years. He has previously won the Ravens coach of the week award at both Spalding and Atholton High School in Columbia.

"Spalding is a place you come to and don't ever want to leave because of the people who are here," the varsity coach said. "From the previous administration of president Kathy Mahar and athletic director Jeff Parsons to the current leaders with president Brian Kohler and athletic director Jon Mellinger, it's a special place. And I have been fortunate to come to a program with a great foundation that was built by former head coach, Mike Whittles."

Schmitt was the 10th and final honoree of 2022, which was the award's 26th season in existence.

Each winner will get a $2,000 donation for their football program. Baltimore will also invite every awardee to its home game against the Atlanta Falcons on Dec. 24 for a chance to be named the Ravens High School Coach of the Year.

This effort is part of Ravens RISE, the team's football outreach program presented by MedStar Sports Medicine. The year-round initiative organizes clinics, tournaments, grants, ticket donations, games at M&T Bank Stadium and chances to meet Ravens players or coaches.
