Flight Makes Emergency Landing At BWI Aiport After Mechanical Issue: Reports

A Spirit Airlines flight returned to BWI Airport for an emergency landing after a mechanical issue, reports said. The plane landed safely.

LINTHICUM, MD — A Spirit Airlines flight made an emergency landing Friday at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport after a mechanical issue, reports said.

The plane landed safely just after taking off from BWI Airport. Nobody was hurt.

Spirit Airlines gave this statement to ABC News:

"Spirit Airlines flight 2077 from Baltimore to Orlando returned back to Baltimore following a suspected mechanical issue after departure. The plane landed safely at BWI, and Guests deplaned under normal procedures. Safety is our top priority, and the plane will be removed from service and inspected by our maintenance department."

Flight Aware, a plane tracking website, reported that the aircraft left Gate D10 Friday at 8:21 p.m. The flight then landed at 8:51 p.m., the tracker said.

ADS-B Exchange Emergency Alerts, another flight tracker on Twitter, said the 2015 Airbus A-321 headed southeast out of BWI Airport and turned around near Annapolis.

Witness Jim Kay reported seeing a plane's engine on fire near BWI Aiport on Friday night.

Around the same time, bystander John Appel said an aircraft made an unusual noise during its takeoff.

"We heard a really strange booming noise as a plane was taking off from BWI a few minutes ago," Appel tweeted Friday evening. "We are very close & under the flight path."
