Storms Prompt Ground Stops At MD, NoVA, DC Airports

Ground stops at BWI, Dulles and Reagan National airports were in effect Friday as a line of thunderstorms moved through the area.

WASHINGTON, DC β€” Severe weather in the area prompted ground stops at several airports Friday afternoon, including BWI Marshall, Reagan National, and Dulles International airports, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The ground stop at BWI was in effect until 7 p.m. ET, while the stop at Reagan was set to expire at 6:45 p.m., the FAA said. The stop at Dulles expired at 6 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Montgomery County, Maryland until 5:30 p.m.

At 4:40 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located over North Potomac, or near Gaithersburg, moving east at 15 mph. The storm carries 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail, the NWS said.

Damaging winds will cause some trees and large branches to fall. This could injure those outdoors, as well as damage homes and vehicles, the Weather Service said. Roadways may become blocked by downed trees. Localized power outages are possible. Unsecured light objects may become projectiles.

Locations in the warning include Germantown, Rockville, Gaithersburg, Olney, Aspen Hill, Potomac, North Bethesda, Montgomery Village, North Potomac, Redland, Darnestown, Derwood, Washington Grove, Brookeville and Dawsonville.
