Una Louise Carew, 81, Millersville and Ocean City

Obituary and service information from Hardesty Funeral Home.

Beloved wife and mother Una Louise (Dougherty) Carew, 81, of Ocean City, MD, formerly resident of Millersville, MD, passed away at the Chesapeake Hospice Mandrin house on March 20, 2015.

Una was born on December 28, 1933 in the Bronx, and remained in New York for 25 years until she married the love of her life, Cyril P. Carew in 1958. The couple settled in Lanham/Riverdale, MD in the early 1960’s, where they raised their three daughters, Patti, Colleen and Erin.

In addition to working in the secretarial field throughout her career, she spent many years volunteering for several organizations, including Meals on Wheels, Mt. Carmel homeless shelter, Boarder Babies, Hospice of AA county, and Road to Recovery for Cancer victims, to name a few. Of all her volunteer work, the one that was closest to her heart was her work with the blind. She spent numerous hours and years reading to the blind, helping with appointments and errands, and just being there for them. She touched many lives and made special friendships through this organization, specifically with “Anna and Mike”.

Una was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother; not only to her 3 daughters and 8 grandchildren, but to many other non-biological family members that she”adopted.” Una enjoyed get-togethers and any reason to spend time with family and friends. She was happiest when she could be cooking and preparing for company.

Una was particularly known for her feistiness and sense of humor. When not telling jokes, volunteering, or entertaining, Una enjoyed writing poems, knitting and crocheting and sending cards and letters to everyone she knew. Her generosity was unending!

Una is survived by her beloved husband of 56 years, Cyril P. Carew, as well as her three daughters, Patti Trimpin and her husband Andy, Colleen Marcellino and her husband Mick, and Erin Bentrewicz and her husband Joe. She is also survived by and now the guardian angel of eight grandchildren: Casey Trimpin, Kara Trimpin, Maggie Trimpin, Josie Marcellino, Liam Marcellino, Molly Marcellino, Megan Bentrewicz and Joey Bentrewicz.
