Since 1953, the World Meteorological Organization has maintained a list of hurricane names for the Atlantic, Eastern North Pacific and Central North Pacific.

In the Atlantic, there are six lists of names that rotate every six years.

For bigger storms—like Katrina, Ivan or Sandy—names are permanently retired and replaced with new ones.

The names are in alphabetical order, and if one season goes over the pre-planned names, it switches over to the Greek alphabet for naming.
