Interim Police Chief Appointment In Town Of Bedford

Captain Fong grew up in Boston and holds a bachelor's and master's degree in law enforcement from Western New England College.

Town Manager Sarah Stanton is pleased to announce that Kenneth Fong of Carlisle, MA has been selected as Interim Police Chief for the Bedford Police Department. The Select Board will formally affirm the appointment on Tuesday, February 22nd.

Mr. Fong, who most recently served as the Captain of District A-1 – District Commander (downtown Boston/Charlestown neighborhoods) of the Boston Police Department, managing over 175 sworn and non-sworn police personnel, will assume the role on Tuesday, March 1. He brings with him a 33-year career in law enforcement.

Captain Fong grew up in Boston and holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in law enforcement from Western New England College. In addition, Captain Fong holds certificates from the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government, Suffolk University Sawyer Business School, the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association, and the Center for Homeland Defense and Security. Captain Fong currently lives in Carlisle with his wife and two sons.

Throughout the years, Captain Fong fulfilled several roles and responsibilities for the Boston Police Department, including but not limited to: Superintendent of Administration and Policy, Night Command, Bureau of Professional Standards, Deputy Superintendent for Operations, Lieutenant, and Sergeant.

He retired as a Captain of the Boston Police Department in June 2020.

“We are thrilled the Captain Fong has agreed to serve as Interim Chief. His years of experience will be a benefit to the Bedford Police Department as we prepare to hire a permanent Chief over the next few months,” Town Manager Sarah Stanton said.

“I am excited to be joining the Bedford Police Department as the Interim Chief,” Captain Fong said. “Through my years of experience, I know that any successful department relies on the cooperation and passion of an entire team of supervisors, officers and support staff. I am looking forward to working with the members of the department as we serve the Bedford community.”

Captain Fong assumes his new role following the departure of Chief Robert Bongiorno who recently announced his retirement. Over the next few months, the Town Manager, working with outside expert consultants and other Town leaders, will undertake a comprehensive assessment center process to identify and hire the next Police Chief. More information will be shared publicly as the process moves forward.
