BEDFORD, MA – Monday, October 9 in Columbus Day. Columbus Day became a national holiday in 1937, under President Roosevelt. The day had been celebrated for centuries before, though, mainly in the form of religious celebration or parades honoring both Italian Heritage and Christopher Columbus.

Originally Columbus Day was observed every October 12, the date Columbus discovered the New World. In 1971 it was changed to the second Monday in October.

MBTA: Blue, Orange, and Red Line trains, Green Line streetcars will operate on a Saturday schedule. Bus, trackless trolleys will operate on a Saturday schedule. Silver line; commuter rail; Hingham, Quincy, and Hull commuter boat service; and inner harbor ferry service will operate on a regular weekday schedule.
