Boston Closes Schools Ahead Of Arctic Freeze

BOSTON, MA — The largest school district in Massachusetts has canceled classes on Friday due to incoming bitter cold.

Boston Public Schools called off classes Thursday afternoon with forecasts predicting dangerously cold wind chills Friday into Saturday.

"To ensure student safety during the expected cold weather, Boston Public Schools will be closed Friday, Feb. 3. All sports and after school activities are canceled through the weekend. Stay warm and be safe," Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said in a tweet.

Wu has declared a "cold emergency" in Boston, which will last from Friday until Sunday, when temperatures are expected to return to normal.

Boston Centers for Youth and Families will have warming centers at community centers across the city during the cold snap. A full list of locations and their hours can be found here. Residents can also visit any Boston Public Library Central or branch location during daytime hours.

Apart from Boston, Mount Alvernia High in Newton, Excel Academy Charter Schools in East Boston and the Crispus Attucks Children's Center announced Friday closures.
