Boston Marathon 2023: Chebet Wins Men's Race, Obiri Nabs Women's Win

Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya, a world record-holder, two-time Olympic gold medalist, and first-time Boston Marathon runner, was favored to win.

BOSTON, MA — Defending champion Evans Chebet of Kenya is the winner of the men's race in the 127th Boston Marathon Boston, and Hellen Obiri of Kenya nabbed the top women's spot. Some 30,000 entrants from 122 countries and all 50 U.S. states began making the 26.2-mile trip from Hopkinton to Boston Monday morning.

The Boston Marathon course starts in Hopkinton and ends on Boylston Street in Boston, with runners passing through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton, and Brookline along the way.

Eliud Kipchoge, also of Kenya, a world record-holder, two-time Olympic gold medalist and first-time Boston Marathon runner was favored to win the men's division but trailed behind.

Kipchoge, who won 15 of his 17 marathons coming into his Boston debut, fell outside the top five shortly after trying to grab a water bottle. He finished more than two minutes behind Chebet.

Evans Chebet also won the Men's Open in 2022, making him the first repeat men’s champion in Boston since Robert Cheruiyot in 2008.

Other 2022 winners included Peres Jepchirchir (women's open), Daniel Romanchuk (men's wheelchair), Manuela Schär (women's wheelchair), Alfredo Delossantos (men's handcycles), Wendy Larsen (women's handcycles), Michael Roeger (men's para athletics) and Lisa Thompson (women's para athletics).
