Brian Weeks liked to visit his mother, Kathleen, regularly at her nursing home. But, the COVID-19 outbreak turned things upside down for the Boston area resident and his mom, who has dementia.

Visitation at the nursing home was severely restricted, which meant that Weeks could no longer see his mom. Weeks knew he had to find another way to make sure that she was safe. So, Weeks considered moving his mom out of the nursing home and hiring a live-in caregiver. But, because his mom has dementia, Weeks wasn't sure if this would be the right thing to do.

"I had no idea what to expect when hiring a live-in caregiver for my Mom," Weeks explained. "The needs of a dementia patient evolve day by day and hour by hour, making it impossible to predict who would be a good fit."

Weeks heard about FCP Live-In, a New England-based company that provides live-in caregivers and dementia care services. After speaking with Rich Williams, an FCP Live-In Care Coordinator, Weeks decided to give live-in care a try for his mom.

"My favorite part of my job is the first meeting with our clients in their home," Williams said. "I enjoy getting to know their history and how I can help them be successful at home."

FCP Live-In helps to set families up for success with its committed staff and wide range of services, including dementia and Alzheimer's disease care.

More than 6 million Americans live with Alzheimer's, a progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia.

As dementia progresses, the roles of caregivers change, from initially offering support to later providing a greater level of care, according to the Alzheimer's Association.

FCP Live-In caregivers are trained in helping clients through each stage of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. Fortunately, the company's live-in caregivers can give clients the one-on-one care they need—and at the time they need it—unlike caregivers at a nursing home who divide their time and attention between multiple residents.

What is FCP Live-In?

Since 1997, FCP Live-In has been caring for older adults who prefer to age in place in their homes. FCP Live-In is not an assisted living facility or a skilled nursing facility but a live-in home care provider that offers the same services as these facilities. For instance, FCP Live-In caregivers help clients with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and other personal care tasks. Caregivers also prepare meals, do light housekeeping, run errands, and provide companionship to seniors.

FCP Live-In Regional Sales Manager Andrea Maroto has been helping New England families for nearly two decades find solutions for their loved ones in need of care.

"The one challenge that families and their loved ones always mentioned is that they didn't want to leave their home, their spouse, their memories," Maroto said. "I often thought about how wonderful it would be for seniors to stay home and get the care they deserve and need while not losing what is most important to them; their family, friends, and that special place they call home."

Families also need solutions when determining whether a loved one with dementia should stay home or move into a senior facility.

"In my experience, one of the biggest challenges that families and their loved ones face is when they are seeking to find care and support for dementia patients," Maroto said. "FCP Live-In offers assistance with a sense of security and comfort in the ease of your home without having to move into a nursing home or assisted living facility."

About FCP Live-In's Caregivers

All of the company's in-home caregivers are nurse's aides, home health aides, and personal care aides with at least two years of professional experience.

FCP Live-In has a rigorous hiring process. Caregiver applicants go through extensive state and federal background checks, and all are bonded and insured. In addition, applicants must undergo multiple interviews and take personality profile and skills assessments to ensure they will be a good fit for a live-in care position.

The in-depth vetting process is necessary since caregivers live with people who need compassion and support while managing various medical conditions, such as diabetes, COPD, cancer, and atrial fibrillation.

"Every client's home is unique and filled with so many memories," Williams said. "I take pride in gathering all of the clients' care needs and preferences and matching their requests to our available caregivers."

FCP Live-In's field supervisors stay in contact with caregivers and communicate with medical professionals to ensure the health and safety of seniors.

"FCP Live-In is about caring for people," said David Anthony, FCP Live-In's Founder and CEO. "I founded this company because the options are limited when it comes to caring for a loved one. Right now, you either have a home health aide who comes to the home for a few hours, or a loved one needs to go into an assisted living facility. But what if you take the best of both? An insured and bonded live-in caregiver that provides 1-on-1 care stays in the home and is there 24/7. That's where FCP Live-In comes in."

Affordable In-Home Care is Key For Seniors

FCP Live-In provides the same services offered at nursing homes and assisted living facilities. FCP Live-In costs, however, are more affordable than senior residences, which can become costly in the long term. For instance, Weeks' mother was living in a nursing home that charged $440 a day.

What makes FCP Live-In more attractive to older adults is their ability to remain in the safety, security, and comfort of their homes. In this way, seniors do not experience the disruption of moving from familiar surroundings.

"I am excited to be a part of such a wonderful and needed service to help our seniors maintain their independence in the comfort of their own home," Maroto said. "Now more than any other time in history, I feel every day, every moment is a blessing and that our seniors deserve the opportunity to stay comfortable, cared for, and supported where they feel their best, in their own home. FCP Live-In provides one-on-one care in familiar environments, offering peace of mind for the families, and security and comfort for the patient with dementia."

Because his mother has dementia, Weeks wanted to make sure that she was well cared for and was concerned whether things would work out at home between his mom and her new live-in caregiver.

"I'm happy to say that Shawon Harris was a perfect fit," Weeks said. "She seamlessly settled into her role of caregiver while quickly becoming a welcome addition to our family. Her firm but compassionate approach got my mom through her most uncooperative moments, always with a smile and a song."

Now, thanks to FCP Live-In, Weeks can spend more time with his mom, and because Kathleen is being cared for at home, she gets to spend more time with her grandchildren.

"We couldn't be more pleased with Shawon's participation in my Mom's care," Weeks said.
