BOSTON — Storms forced 111 flights out of Boston Logan International Airport to be canceled Friday and another 304 were delayed as travelers tried to fly out for the Juneteenth holiday, FlightAware trackers showed.

Though the afternoon thunderstorms were mostly to blame for the lengthy list of cancelations and delays, the hefty number of travelers contributed to schedule disruptions and left long lines at check in counters and security.

Weather at other airports can also share some of the blame, Massport spokesperson Jennifer Mehigan said, adding that delays are common during the summer thunderstorm season.

Images shared by Boston 25 showed travelers sleeping on the terminal floors since most hotels were booked due to the U.S. Open in Brookline, the NBA finals, and the long weekend ahead.

Travel issues have been a common theme at Logan over the past few months amid a pilot shortage, JetBlue cancellations through the month of April, and weather delays.

Many major airlines blamed only air traffic controllers and apologized to travelers who had been stuck on the tarmac for hours.

Though Friday's afternoon storms could be limited in duration, they may bring some areas winds between 40 and 60 miles per hour and hail up to an inch in size, according to AccuWeather.
