BOSTON, MA — Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Lucas Giolito, 29, could miss the entire 2024 season due to an arm injury, sources told ESPN.

Giolito, who signed a two-year contract, will likely need surgery to repair what is being described as a possible torn UCL and flexor strain, ESPN's Jeff Passan said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Tuesday.

"We're obviously concerned," Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters in Florida Tuesday morning, according to Boston.com. "Not a good day for us."

Giolito underwent Tommy John surgery — a procedure to stabilize the elbow, reduce or eliminate pain, and restore range of motion — in 2012 as a prospect, Boston.com noted. However, he has remained relatively healthy during his career in the major leagues.

He was first signed by the Washington Nationals in July 2012 and has also played for the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, and Cleveland Guardians.
