BOSTON, MA — Next week, a famous brand of donuts originally sold out of the back door of a Martha's Vineyard bakery will be available at the side door of a Boston bar.

Oak Bluffs-based Back Door Donuts announced recently that it will begin operating its Back Door Donuts Boston Pop-up at Loretta's Last Call, located at 1 Lansdowne St. According to Back Door, the donuts will be sold out of the Loretta's side door directly next to Lucky Strike on Ipswich Street.

Martha's Vineyard Times reports that the pop-up will be open from 7 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. daily beginning on March 15.

"BDD stans asked ... and we listened! Our team has been working hard behind the scenes over the past couple of years to bring a little piece of everyone's favorite island donut shop to the great city of Boston," Back Door Donuts said in a statement on its website.

The statement continued: "In partnership with our friends at Loretta's Last Call, the Back Door Donuts Pop-Up will serve freshly baked donuts, apple fritters, and all of our other assorted baked goods that you know and love ... when the sun goes down, of course! We're thrilled to bring the 'Donuts After Dark' tradition to Fenway's historic Lansdowne Street, and we look forward to crossing paths with longtime fans and newcomers alike."

Back Door Donuts' Boston menu includes several donuts, including: Apple Fritter, Boston Cream, Buttercrunch, Buttermilk Glazed, Chocolate Coconut, Chocolate Frosted, Chocolate Glazed, Cinnamon Sugar, Coconut Donut, Double Chocolate, Honey Dipped, Lemon Jelly, Maple Bacon, Mini Fritter, Old Fashioned, Party Donut and Raspberry Jelly.

Back door said Boston customers should order online for faster service and to avoid long lines.

According to Back Door Donuts' website, the "back door" bakery tradition goes back to Walmsley's Bakery in the late 1940s. Overnight bakers at the Oak Bluffs establishment were known to give away donuts out of the back door during the wee hours of the morning.

In 1971, the bakery's name was changed to Old Stone. Peter White, who ran the establishment, is considered the first to sell donuts out of the bakery's back door in the middle of the night.

"There were no hours in those days. If you wanted a donut at 4 a.m., Peter and his staff would gladly oblige," according to the Back Door Donuts website. "What began as a secret known only to those 'in the know' quickly became a must-do for Vineyard residents and visitors alike. Thus the tradition of Back Door Donuts was born."
