Sunday Busiest Travel Day In New England Since Pandemic: TSA

The TSA also said Sunday marked the busiest day of travel across the country, as travel approached about 90% of pre-pandemic levels.

BOSTON, MA — Sunday marked the busiest day for New England airports since the start of the pandemic, TSA spokesperson Dan Velez told MassLive.

Logan Airport saw snaking crowds and hour-long security waits Sunday morning as thousands of travelers returned from their Thanksgiving travels. 77,365 people passed through one of New England’s six major airports, according to the Transportation Security Administration. Massport reported that 800,000 to 900,000 travelers passed through Logan during the 10-day Thanksgiving travel period, according to Boston 25 News.

Sunday also marked the busiest travel day since the pandemic across the country, according to a TSA Public Affairs spokesperson. 2,451,300 people passed through U.S. airports Sunday, the busiest single day since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020. For the 10 days up to and including Sunday, a whopping 20.9 million people traveled nationally, about 89% of pre-pandemic levels.

The record-breaking travel occurred as the World Health Organization designated the Omicron COVID-19 variant a “variant of concern.” On Monday, the U.S. restricted travel from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi.
