The Coolidge Announces 70mm Film Series

Coolidge Corner Theatre's Cinema in 70m series brings iconic films in stunning clarity this September, plus a special Vertigo seminar

Brookline, Massachusetts (August 20, 2024)** — The Coolidge Corner Theatre, affectionately known as “the Coolidge,” has announced its “Cinema in 70mm” film series, set to run throughout September 2024. This special series will take place in the Coolidge’s historic 440-seat Moviehouse 1, which will be specially equipped to showcase 70mm prints of several iconic films.

The lineup for the series includes:

- **The Master** (2012, dir. Paul Thomas Anderson) - Fri, Sep 6 & Tues, Sept 10 at 7:30pm
- **2001: A Space Odyssey** (1968, dir. Stanley Kubrick) - Sat, Sept 7 & Weds, Sept 11 at 7:30pm
- **Airport** (1970, dir. George Seaton) - Sun, Sept 8 at 2pm
- **Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood** (2019, dir. Quentin Tarantino) - Sat, Sept 14 & Weds, Sept 18 at 7:30pm
- **Lawrence of Arabia** (1962, dir. David Lean) - Sun, Sept 15 at 2pm
- **Vertigo** (1958, dir. Alfred Hitchcock) - Fri, Sept 13 & Tues, Sept 17 at 7:30pm
- **The Sound of Music** (1965, dir. Robert Wise) - Sun, Sept 22 at 2pm
- **Inception** (2010, dir. Christopher Nolan) - Sat, Sept 21 & Weds, Sept 25 at 7:30pm

In addition to these screenings, the Coolidge will host an educational seminar prior to the showing of *Vertigo* on Tuesday, September 17. Led by Coolidge lead projectionist Tom Welch, the seminar will offer a hands-on introduction to the 70mm film format.

70mm film, known for its large gauge, delivers an exceptionally immersive cinematic experience, offering unparalleled image and sound quality. Popularized in the 1960s with epic films like *Lawrence of Arabia* and *Spartacus*, the format has seen a resurgence in recent years, embraced by renowned filmmakers such as Christopher Nolan, Paul Thomas Anderson, Quentin Tarantino, and Jordan Peele.

In 2023, the Coolidge launched the “Film Forever Fund,” a dedicated initiative to preserve celluloid film projection in Greater Boston. Proceeds from the fund support shipping costs, projector maintenance, and the continued training of skilled projectionists.

“Cinema in 70mm offers our audiences an extraordinary movie-going experience,” said Coolidge Program Director Mark Anastasio. “This remarkable format provides unmatched clarity, richer colors, and more expansive aspect ratios, drawing viewers deeper into these incredible stories.”

The series is co-presented by Screen Boston, an online guide to repertory listings and special screenings at Greater Boston’s independent theaters.

Screenings start at 7pm unless otherwise indicated. Tickets and showtimes can be found at coolidge.org. The Coolidge Corner Theatre is located at 290 Harvard Street, Brookline, MA. Tickets are priced at $23 for general admission and $20 for Coolidge members.
