DANVERS, MA — Three of the biggest retailers at the Liberty Tree Mall were shut down on Monday after the Danvers Health Department determined they had been without running water for up to three days.

The Danvers Health Department said Target, Dollar Tre and Staples were forced to close because the lack of running water made restrooms unavailable and sprinkler systems non-functioning.

Director of Public Health Frank Giancalone determined that the stores must shut down to the public until the source of the water interruption was found and full water service was restored.

The Danvers Health Department said the stores may have been without water since Saturday and that a Fire Department, Health Department, mall and store management determined that the cause of the disruption was on private property and not on town property.

"Adequate potable water and properly running toilet facilities are required and essential for public health and safety," the town said in a statement released Monday afternoon.
