Danvers Resident to Compete at Rio Paralympics

Next month, swimmer Cailin Currie will compete for Team USA at the 2016 Paralympics.

DANVERS, MA — Kayla Harrison isn't the only Danvers resident with plans to compete in Rio.

Next month, Cailin Currie will swim for Team USA at the 2016 Paralympics. Currie, who suffers from a visual impairment known as aniridia, will swim the 100-meter freestyle, 400 freestyle, 100 backstroke, and 100 butterfly.

According to her Team USA bio, Currie started swimming at the recommendation of a physical therapist and encouragement from her family. She first entered a pool at age six months and began training at age nine.

She made her senior debut at the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships and this will be her first Paralympics. Most recently, she finished eight in the 100-meter butterfly at the 2015 World Championships.

The 2016 Paralympics start on Sept. 7.
