DANVERS, MA — Danvers Public Schools are closed on Tuesday and all after-school athletic events and other activities were postponed ahead of what had been forecast as a potentially significant snowstorm expected to arrive on Tuesday morning.

A townwide snow emergency parking ban was also declared for Danvers.

Danvers officials said the parking ban was to begin at 11 p.m. on Monday and last until "all winter operations related to this coming storm are completed."

All vehicles must be removed from public roads with those left subject to ticketing and towing.

Curbside trash and recycling collections will also be canceled on Tuesday and will resume on Wednesday, with a one-day delay for the rest of the week.

The call comes ahead of what had been forecast as one of the North Shore's biggest storms of the past two years with up to 8 inches or more expected during an intense stretch of snow between Tuesday morning and late Tuesday afternoon.

Forecasts later Monday showed a nor'easter heading for southern New England has shifted south — and with it, the high snow totals that were initially predicted across a big section of the state.

On Monday afternoon, snow totals were downgraded from 8 to 12 inches along the Mass Pike corridor to as little as 2 inches close to Boston.

The National Weather Service also shrunk the areas in the state under a winter storm warning.

The warning now encompasses southern Worcester County, plus Suffolk, most of Middlesex, Essex, Plymouth, Bristol and Barnstable County.
