Who hasn't heard of square dancing? It usually conjures up thoughts of Western music and clothing with a hoe down theme. That is not modern square dancing at all. Modern square dancing can be a great family activity. No partner is needed. Anyone who can walk briskly can learn to square dance. It's great mental and physical exercise as well as fun and social. It really helps to improve listening skills while generating smiles and laughter along the way.

It includes any music with a good beat and basically whatever type of clothes one is comfortable wearing while moving at a brisk pace.

Danvers has been home to Riverside Square Dance Club for over 50 years and has changed with the times. On Saturday, September 7, they are offering pizza and a free 1 hour mini-introduction to modern square dancing. This is prior to the clubs regular monthly dance which new folks are invited to watch to learn more about whether this is an activity that one would enjoy. It all takes place at 7:00 pm at the All Saints Episcopal Church, 13 Holten St. in Danvers.

Another free opportunity to be introduced to modern square dancing is on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at the same location. It's an evening for beginners to dance and enjoy tasty food offered by the club. Club members will help new people learn the moves. Come to both or just one to find out if you want to take the class and join in the fun. Classes continue each Wednesday starting September 18 from 7:00 to 8:30 for 10 weeks at a cost of $85 per person.
