Papa Gino's Bankruptcy Filed After Stores Close
On Sunday, many woke to find that their local Papa Gino's or D'Angelo's had closed down "overnight." Monday, the company announced a sale.
DEDHAM, MA—A day after dozens of stores abruptly closed, Papa Gino's Pizza has filed for bankruptcy and announced that its parent company has been sold.
On Monday, the parent company, Papa Gino's Holdings Corporation, which also owns D'Angelo's Grilled Sandwiches restaurants, announced it had been sold to a Wynnchurch Capital portfolio company, only a day after shuttering 95 locations around the region.
“We regret having to abruptly close the restaurants without notice but were unable to share information until the proposed sale transaction was finalized," said Chief Financial Officer Corey Wendland. "Please know that every team member affected was asked to reapply for positions in remaining restaurants, and some are already starting at new locations within the next week. We hope to place even more people in the coming days.”

In a statement, the company said the sale would strengthen the chain's financial resources, allowing PGHC to "remodel and modernize" its 141 company-owned restaurants in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Connecticut; open additional restaurants throughout New England; and "enhance its online ordering capabilities at all restaurants."
"The company made the difficult decision to close 95 restaurants – 178 restaurants remain open and are thriving," spokesperson Rick Wilner told Patch.

"We are pleased to have reached an agreement that will ensure a long and prosperous future for these iconic New England restaurants," said Corey Wendland, chief financial officer, in a statement. "For some time, we have been pursuing a plan to strengthen our financial footing and secure capital for investment in our restaurants, while also addressing our significant debt load. We are confident that the agreement with Wynnchurch achieves all of those goals."
In order to "effectively and efficiently complete the proposed sale," the company on Monday filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
