Miles River Bridge in Hamilton to Close Temporarily

Starting on Columbus Day, the bridge over the Miles River on Bridge Street will close for five days.

After workers found that the Bridge Street bridge is supported by irregularly-shaped boulders last week, work on the bridge will continue. The project to replace the bridge's granite block culvert began in July, and the bridge had been one-way only during that time.

The project was scheduled to be finished by the end of September, but at least one lane of the bridge will now reopen on Oct. 14. The police department is developing a detour plan with the contractor.

Removing the boulders will likely cause the road to collapse, said Town Manager Michael Lombardo on Tuesday.

"The intent of closing it next week is to take [the road] out completely and put the culvert in, and put the road back together, as opposed to doing one side then the other," said Lombardo.

Lombardo said one of the engineers on the project estimated that the foundation underneath the bridge is around 150 years old.
