Northern Essex Community College: NECC VP Receives National Recognition

Haverhill and Lawrence, MA (November 30, 2021) Michael McCarthy of Middleton, Northern Essex Community College’s chief financial officer and chief operating officer, has received the Outstanding Chief Business Officer Award from the Community College Business Officers (CCBO). The award was presented at the annual conference held in Nashville in late October.

The award recognizes a chief financial officer for accomplishments, strategic planning and policy implementation that support the college mission.

As a member of the President’s Executive Team, McCarthy is responsible for providing leadership and oversight in the areas of finance, human resources, budgeting, strategic planning, information technology, purchasing, facilities, maintenance, safety and security, police and sheriff training academies, auxiliary services, athletics and wellness.

Prior to joining NECC, McCarthy served for over 16 years at the Essex County Sheriff’s Department in Middleton, Massachusetts.

McCarthy was nominated for this honor by Jennifer Borislow, chair of the college’s board of trustees, and Allison Dolan-Wilson, vice president of institutional advancement. They credited him with growing the college’s cash reserves from $4M to $20M in four years; implementing a new hiring process to increase the diversity of applicants for employment at Northern Essex; and providing leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In nominating McCarthy, Trustee Chair Borislow wrote “Mike is extremely dedicated and a much beloved leader on the NECC campus. He is a mentor to many and is one of the first to welcome new faculty and staff to the school.”

Prior to joining NECC, Michael served for over 16 years at the Essex County Sheriff’s Department in Middleton, Massachusetts.
