The American Nurses Association and World Health Organization have announced 2020-2021 as the “Year(s) of the Nurse,” making it even more important to appreciate the hard work our nurses do every day. This May will be a month-long celebration of nurses, including National Nurses Week, giving our entire network an excellent opportunity to celebrate your nurses.

Home Instead Senior Care Melrose would like to thank all of the nurses who refer to or work for with us. National Nurses Week starts Thursday, May 6 through May 12. In the month of May, join us in celebrating all of the nurses who refer to and work for Home Instead. To celebrate them, we will be providing fruit baskets.

This year, more than ever, has highlighted the importance of nursing's role during the COVID-19 pandemic. The importance of nurses has led the World Health Organization and the American Nurses Association to refer to 2020-2021 as "The Year of the Nurse."

And while this past year has highlighted the importance of nursing, their history shows that nursing has been essential for a long time. Nurses have played critical roles in wars, disasters, and pandemics throughout history. Nursing’s origin goes back to 268 BC, and modern nursing can be traced to the 16th century. Florence Nightingale, whose birthday on May 12 is the culmination of National Nursing Week, is credited with modern professional nursing principles in 1855.
