Legislators Announce $126,000 Mental Health/Wellness Grant for Schools

Melrose is receiving a Supporting Students' Social and Emotional Learning, Behavioral and Mental Health, and Wellness Grant from DESE

BOSTON—State Senator Jason Lewis, State Representative Kate Lipper-Garabedian, and the City of Melrose are excited to announce that Melrose is receiving a $126,000 Supporting Students’ Social and Emotional Learning, Behavioral and Mental Health, and Wellness Grant from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

This grant will be used to strengthen Melrose’s capacity to support the social-emotional and behavioral health needs of students, families, and educators and to build strong partnerships with community-based mental health providers.

“Especially in the wake of the pandemic, it is imperative that we increase support for the mental health and wellness of our students and families,” said State Senator Jason Lewis, Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Education. “I’m thrilled that the Melrose schools are receiving this state grant to further strengthen their resources and supports for student mental health and wellness.”

"I am glad that Melrose Public Schools is receiving this funding to support students' mental health and well-being," said State Representative Kate Lipper-Garabedian. "As a former teacher and the parent of two elementary school children, I recognize the importance of adequate resources for our schools to be able to meet the behavioral and mental health needs of students, and I am pleased to see the District receive state funding to advance this effort."

"We are incredibly appreciative of our partners at DESE for awarding us the FY2024 Supporting Students Social Emotional Learning, Behavioral & Mental Health, and Wellness grant for $126,000,” said Interim Superintendent of the Melrose Public Schools District John Macero. “Our students in Melrose will benefit from several supports through the funding we will receive, including a new social-emotional screener. This will allow our building-based and district-wide staff the opportunity to better understand the holistic needs of our students and to personalize their next steps for instruction."
