Melrose Offering Free Mental Health First Aid Training Courses

Participants will learn how to support neighbors, friends and loved ones experiencing emotional distress and/or substance use challenges.

MELROSE, MA — The City of Melrose has announced that it once again will be offering free Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training courses to the community this fall and winter.

According to officials, the courses are designed to prepare participants to better support neighbors, friends and loved ones who are experiencing emotional distress and/or substance use challenges.

Participants will learn how to reach out to those who are struggling and connect them to the appropriate resources.

The courses are developed by MHFA, which is part of the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, and are open to adults 18 years of age and older who live and work in Melrose.

The classes offered this fall and winter are:

  • Adult Mental Health First Aid, which is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sept. 11 and Sept. 13 at Milano Center, 201 West Foster St. The deadline to register is Sept. 1.
  • Adult Mental Health First Aid, which is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Nov. 13 and Nov. 15 at a yet-to-be-determined location. The deadline to register is Nov. 3.
  • Older Adult Mental Health First Aid (class offered for older participants), which is scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. on Oct. 4 and Oct. 11 at Milano Center.

Registration for the courses can be done on the Melrose Recreation website. Meanwhile, registration for the older adult class can be done in person at Milano Center or by phone at 781-662-6886.
