MELROSE, MA — The vast majority residents have power back after a second outage Thursday had more than 2,700 power customers in the dark. Mayor Gail Infurna's office reported National Grid said the late-night outage, which affected 2,741 homes, was not planned by the utility company, but rather an aftereffect from the devastating storm that knocked out power for half a million people in New England.

Infurna's office said fewer than 300 residences are still without power, and that they may remain so until Saturday. That supports National Grid's estimated restoration time on its website.

Most of the outages as of early Friday afternoon appear to be in the Mount Hood area.
