Melrose School Committee Names Superintendent Finalists

MELROSE, MA – The Melrose School Committee has forwarded three finalists to the Screening Committee in their search for the next superintendent of Melrose public schools.

Last week, the 13-member Screening Committee reached a consensus, and named Garth McKinney, Tim Piwowar, and David Ryan as superintendent finalists.

All finalists currently serve as superintendents at schools across the state and New Hampshire.

McKinney, a resident of North Reading, currently serves as interim superintendent of Milton schools and is a graduate of the Boston College Lynch School of Education.

Piwowar resides in Westford, and serves as superintendent of schools in Billerica. He is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Ryan, also a graduate of the Boston Lynch School of Education, is a resident of Hooksett, New Hampshite and currently serves as superintendent of schools in Exeter, New Hampshire.

Melrose school community members can meet these finalists when they visit Melrose the week of March 20 between 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in the Melrose High School Commons, and the School Committee will interview them on the evening of their visit.

Piwowar is scheduled to visit the district next Tuesday, followed by McKinney on Wednesday, and Ryan on Thursday.

Here are their schedules:

Tuesday, March 21

  • 5 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Piwowar meets-and-greets with parents and community members in the Melrose High School Learning Commons
  • 7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Piwowar is interviewed by the School Committee at Melrose City Hall.

Wednesday, March 22

  • 5 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. McKinney meets-and-greets with parents and community members in the Melrose High School Learning Commons
  • 7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. McKinney is interviewed by the School Committee at Melrose City Hall.

Thursday, March 23

  • 5 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Ryan meets-and-greets with parents and community members in the Melrose High School Learning Commons
  • 7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Ryan will be interviewed by the School Committee at Melrose City Hall.

One of the three finalists will replace Superintendent Julie Kukenberger, who, in October, announced she would leave her position at the end of the 2022-2023 school year.
