Melrose Student Earns National Merit Scholarship

MELROSE, MA – A Belmont Hill student is among the winners of the recently awarded National Merit Scholarships.

Jeremy Eaton, of Melrose, was awarded the National Merit Villanova University Scholarship. He plans to pursue a career in electrical engineering.

The 2023 National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced more than 3,000 winners of the scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities on Wednesday.

Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the finalists in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution.

These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship, officials said.

In 2023, 153 institutions are underwriting Merit Scholarship awards through the National Merit Scholarship Program. Sponsor colleges and universities include 81 private and 72 public institutions located in 42 states and the District of Columbia.

Eaton is among the more than 7,000 high school seniors who will receive scholarships through the program, which is set to award those students with nearly $28 million in funding for undergraduate studies.
