MELROSE, MA — Melrose High School made the cut this month as one of 17 high school teams chosen to participate in GBH’s High School Quiz Show tournament, GBH announced last week.

The televised program will kick off with tapings in January 2023. Contest matchups will begin airing on Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. with Melrose facing Concord-Carlisle in a wild card competition.

This is Melrose’s first appearance on High School Quiz Show, which is entering its 14th season on the air. Melrose is one of four first-time competitors in this year’s competition.

Teams had to qualify to make it to this point via a “Super Sunday” event earlier this month. Melrose emerged alongside the 16 other qualifying schools from a field of 65 entrants.

“After a successful Super Sunday, we are eager to welcome these 17 schools from across Massachusetts back to GBH for an annual academic showdown,” GBH Executive Producer Hillary Wells said in a statement announcing High School Quiz Show plans.

High School Quiz Show stayed on the air through the COVID-19 pandemic, transitioning to a remote model for its two most recent seasons. The show is back in-person for tapings this year.

TV and radio personality Billy Costa hosts tapings, where schools compete in individual matchups to then advance in the tournament bracket. In Melrose’s case, the team will need to beat Concord-Carlisle in their wild card contest to secure a matchup with Mansfield in the first round of the main bracket.

High School Quiz Show episodes will air on GBH 2 and High School Quiz Show’s YouTube channel.
