Red Hatters for March 2024

by Shirley Rabb

Here we are again, and now with daylight savings time on our side we are ready to go into a new season of warmth, and fun, and frolics.

March 10th we started the month by going to see The Magic of Ireland at the Reagle Music Theater in Waltham. This was a Saint Patrick's Day Concert.

The stage was without a whole lot of adornment, and the actors did not even have to make clothes changes. We were transported to the heart of the Emerald Isle.

The cast consisted of Ciaran Sheehan, Kathy St. George, Jennifer Ellis, and Richard Sherburne. There was a musical accompaniment for the singers by Ryan Douglas on drum and Heather Swanson on violin as well as piano background; and the songs were all Irish.

Some foot stamping and clapping and some soft and sweet. Not a dry house in the hall when Ciaran sang Danny Boy.

A group of step dancers from the Harney Academy performed in the tradition of Irish dance with precision and grace. Some of the dancers could not have been more that 7 or 8 years old.

It was a lovely afternoon as we headed for the Chateau in Waltham for dinner. The food is always good and our waiter was pleasant, but this is one of the few places that will not give us separate checks so it will likely be our last visit here.

On March 14th. we headed locally to the Melrose Senior Center for more of Ireland.

It was the music of Dennis O'Gorman that kept us clapping our hands and enjoying his Irish voice and humor.

The food was ,of course, corned beef and cabbage with colorful cupcakes and Irish bread.

It was a fun afternoon as the people of Melrose filled the room with smiles and applause.

We really did have a good time even if the picture doesn't look like it.

March 26th it was a brunch at the Melrose Senior Center. Erika and her staff did a wonderful job of setting up. Flowers and decorations made the room look like it was ready for Easter. Pastry was displayed on a center table looking good enough to start with. There was juice and tea, and coffee for our beginnings.

The menu was scrambled eggs or omelets made by Erika, and there were pancakes and bacon at the other cook station.

There were plastic eggs with surprises of candy or gift cards; and the baskets of flowers went to the oldest person at each table.

It was great gathering to start the holiday season and again the Red Hatters had a very nice morning.

The plan is to keep moving and enjoy every day by being Red Hat Happy.
