Severe Weather Sweeps Through Melrose, Knocks Out Power

The storm left several thousand Melrose customers in the dark, according to National Grid's outage map.

MELROSE, MA — A round of severe weather swept through Melrose Sunday evening, bringing thunderstorm conditions and knocking out power to a large swath of energy customers in Melrose, according to National Grid.

Power had been restored across much of the city as of midnight, according to National Grid’s outage map. Some outages remained, however, with estimated restoration times largely set at 1:30 a.m. on Monday morning.

The National Weather Service’s Boston office issued a severe thunderstorm warning for areas including Melrose around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday as a series of thunderstorms rolled across Massachusetts.

The warning was set to remain in effect until 8:30 p.m., with forecasters predicting winds as high as 60 miles-per-hour and penny-sized hail across communities north of Boston.

National Grid’s outage map showed large outages across much of the western half of Melrose after the storm. A series of smaller outages were also reported in the area around Slayton Road.

As Melrose cleaned up, other neighboring communities similarly noted the aftermath of severe weather on Sunday night.

In Stoneham, the Stoneham Fire Department said it was fielding widespread reports of downed trees around 7:45 p.m.

National Grid was also tracking other ongoing power outages to the west of Melrose, in Medford, and to the east in places including Lynn and Swampscott as of Sunday night.
