Milford Gets Its First Free Little Art Library

Instead of books, Milford residents will be able to take art, and leave some for others.

MILFORD, MA — The new trend in micro libraries has come to Milford: the town now has its first free little art library.

A spin on the little free book libraries, the free little art library (FLAG) allows anyone to take home a piece of art for free, or leave a piece behind someone else to enjoy.

"The goal of a FLAG is to encourage visitors to create art and share it with others," Milford Cultural Council Vice President Sandee Buckley said in a news release. "While it is not necessary for people to make art in order to take art, we do hope that visitors will consider making something for the gallery throughout the year."

Milford's new FLAG is located outside the public library downtown. The cultural council chose that location because people of all ages visit the library, Chair Geri Eddins said. The library will also help stock the FLAG by making art materials available at the front desk for anyone who wants to leave something behind.

The founders hope to keep the FLAG well stocked, and have solicited donations from other FLAGs across the globe. Works of art from 11 states and Australia have been sent to Milford to launch the library. The cultural council is also seeking donations from the Milford Youth Center.

If you want to submit a piece to the FLAG, keep the work no more than four inches square — although dimensions may vary since the library accepts all mediums, from jewelry and knits to painted rocks and tiny canvases.
