MILFORD, MA — Milford's Upper Charles Trail will soon become a link in a 3,000-mile pathway spanning Maine to Florida.

The East Coast Greenway Alliance recently designated the Upper Charles Trail sections in Holliston and Sherborn as part of the trail. The section from Holliston to Mt. Pleasant Street in Milford is next, the alliance said.

"The 6.7-mile Holliston Rail Trail was designated in early 2023, and a completed trail section in Milford to Mt. Pleasant Street will be designated part of the East Coast Greenway route in the very near future. When complete, the Upper Charles Rail Trail will meet the Bruce Freeman Trail connecting the towns of Milford, Holliston, Sherborn and Framingham," the alliance said in a news release.

According to the East Coast Greenway map, the trail does not continue along the section of Upper Charles Trail that begins near Fino Field and heads north to Hopkinton. The East Coast Greenway instead continues south down Alden and South Central streets toward Bellingham and Florida beyond.

The greenway was founded in 1991 with a goal of connecting 15 states along the East Coast with a biking and walking route. Today, about 35 percent of the greenway is along a dedicated path like the Upper Charles Trail — and more than 50 percent of the trail through Massachusetts travels along a path rather than roads.
