6 From Needham HS Earn Globe 2018 Spring All-Scholastic Honors

A Needham resident who attends a private school also received the honor.

NEEDHAM, MA — The spring season was a good time for the athletes of Needham.

Six Needham High School students and one resident who attends a private school were named to the Boston Globe All-Scholastic team. The season honor recognizes the area's best high school athletes.

Below are the local recipients, according to the Globe:

Baseball

  • Tom Chmielewski, junior - Went 7-2 on the mound with an ERA of 1.40.
  • Matt Howard, Coach of the Year - The four-year coach helped lead the Rockets to a state title.

Boys' Lacrosse

  • Jason Child, senior - Scored 165 goals and picked up 88 assists during his years at Needham. He'll play for Boston University next season.

Girls' Lacrosse

  • Callie Hem, junior - Scored 52 goals in an injury-shorten 14-game season. She has committed to Northwestern.

Boys' Tennis

  • Kevin Chao, senior - Reached the state final of the individual tournament and only lost two regular season matches.

Boys Volleyball

  • Cam Robins, senior - Earned 329 kills during a South sectional-championship season.
  • Eli Wallace, senior - Picked up 911 assists, 102 kills, and 35 blocks. He'll play club volleyball at Maryland next season.
  • Dave Powell, Coach of the Year - Led Needham to their fourth straight South sectional title and fifth in six years. He has a record of 181-32 in nine seasons.

Private School Students

Boys' Tennis

  • Eric Kruglak, junior at Gann Academy - Helped lead Gann to an undefeated season while playing at No. 1 singles.
