NEEDHAM, MA — The Needham police are slowly getting their newest officer trained but there's only one problem: he doesn't have a name. The new community service dog is almost ready to get to work and it looks like his first order of business might be his own name.

Needham was one of four departments to receive funding from the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office for the dog.

In an effort to start the pup on the right track in bringing the community together, the department released a video on Facebook asking the community to comment what the dog's name should be.

Officers will be watching the comments for potential names as well as heading into Needham public schools with the pup to get suggestions from students.

The pup's main job includes helping to de-escalate situations, engaging with vulnerable and withdrawn members of the community, interacting with community members suffering from mental health or stress issues, comforting victims and witnesses of violence and promote police-community engagement.
