Needham Veterans of Foreign Wars Hosts Paralyzed Veterans

(Needham, Massachusetts, November 4, 2023). After a four-year interruption due to the Pandemic, the Needham Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lt. Manson H. Carter Post 2498, once again hosted a dinner and game night for Boston-area paralyzed veterans.

Sixteen paralyzed and disabled veterans from the Brockton and West Roxbury Veterans’ Healthcare facilities accompanied by nurses and volunteer assistants, arrived at the Post in special coaches. They were welcomed by Post members who draped the guests with flowery paper leis.

The guests were treated to a full dinner served by volunteers from the Needham Police Department. The menu included medallions of beef, broiled potatoes, green beans, and a green salad. Dinner was topped by chocolate ice cream bon bons and custom designed cakes from Needham’s Hazels Bakery. Needham Police Dogs Rocket and Ghost brought cheer to the patients, visiting everyone.

After dinner, the guests played blackjack with VFW volunteer dealers. No money changed hands, but everyone had fun “betting” on their blackjack cards. Prizes donated by the Boston Bruins and New England Patriots went to the card player with the most chips.

As they departed, each guest received a gift bag from the Post containing items useful to patients while in hospital care. The fun ended at 7:00PM, as the guests boarded their coaches for the trip back to the Veterans’ Administration Healthcare facilities.

“it was a fun evening. Our guests were able to leave their healthcare facilities for some fun and a good meal,” said Commander Tim Dooher.
